Press Release - Bryson Signs Taxpayer Protection Pledge

Unlike Bredesen, Rules out Statewide Property Tax

State Senator and Republican nominee for Governor Jim Bryson today signed the Americans for Tax Reform's Taxpayer Protection Pledge on-air during the Gill Report talk radio program. The pledge commits the signer to oppose new taxes and any tax increases.

"I am proud to put my name on the Taxpayer Protection Pledge," said Sen. Bryson. "This pledge to Tennesseans ensures that I will veto any new taxes. I invite the Governor to join me in signing this pledge to show Tennesseans his commitment to low taxes and to allay any fears that voters may have in him pursuing a state income tax or statewide property tax."

Gov. Bredesen has never signed the pledge. In fact, he called promising voters a position on taxes "political posturing" and "nonsense."

"Tennessee voters deserve a definitive statement from the Governor on whether or not he supports the creation of a statewide property tax," said Bryson spokesman Lance Frizzell. "The state Comptroller has crisscrossed Tennessee campaigning for it yet the Governor remains silent."
